Nami Island, the sponsor of the Nami Concours, welcomes over 3 million visitors every year among which 1 million visitors come from over 120 countries making Nami Island Korea’s representative eco-tourist destination.
Combining a refreshingly beautiful natural setting only 63 kilometers from Korea’s capital of Seoul, Nami Island is a peaceful place for culture and leisure at harmony with humanity and nature. Following a five-minute ferry ride, visitors meet a forest of verdant trees, holding up the sky, and broad grassy commons where ostriches, squirrels and peacocks amidst shrubs and wild flowers to welcome each visitor.

Nami Island was founded by Mr. Minn Byung-do (1916–2006) who, among his many accomplishments, was an early and consistent supporter of a variety of cultural activities including children’s literature, music, and the fine arts.
As a part of Nami Island efforts to ensure the continuation of this unique spirit, it began to host a children’s book festival in 2005 in honor of the 200th birthday anniversary of Hans Christian Andersen.
Since 2009, Nami Island has been the official sponsor of the IBBY Hans Christian Andersen Awards.
In recognition of the island’s commitment to preserving its natural beauty and its role as a safe and healthy haven for children it has also been formally designated a “child friendly” venue by UNICEF.

매년 300만명이 방문하는 남이섬은 나미콩쿠르의 공식 후원사이다.
120개국이 넘는 나라에서 100만명의 외국인이 방문하는 남이섬은 서울에서 불과 63km 떨어진 곳에 위치한 작은 섬으로 자연과 동물이 함께하는 대한민국의 대표 관광지이자 휴식처이다.
민병도 회장에 의해 세워진 남이섬은 일찍부터 어린이 책과 음악, 미술을 포함한 다양한 문화활동을 지원해왔다.
남이섬의 이러한 문화 향상의 지속적인 노력의 일환으로 한스 크리스찬 안데르센 탄생 200주년을 기념, 2005년 ‘세계어린이책나라축제’를 개최하게 되었다. 그리고 2009년부터는 IBBY 한스 크리스찬 안데르센상 공식 스폰서가 되었다.
남이섬 자연의 아름다움과 아이들의 안전과 건강을 위한 계속적인 노력으로 유니세프는 2010년 남이섬을 ‘어린이친화공원’으로 선정하였다.

In 2005, the 1st Nami Island International Children's Book Festival (NAMBOOK) was held on Nami Island in honor of the birth of Hans Christian Andersen.
Since then it has become one of Korea's most internationally known cultural events.
The festival inspired many local governments to turn their attention to using children's literature as a focus for cultural events.
Since 2005, the festival has been held every year with the participation of more than 70 countries.
At NAMBOOK's opening, on average diplomats from more than 20 countries come to celebrate. From 2010, the festival will be relaunched as biennial event with even more creative contents.
What distinguishes NAMBOOK is that visitors can actually encounter the imaginary world usually found only in picture books during the festival.
There are exhibitions and workshops where children can see the original illustrations.
There are children's books from all over the world on display too, thus allowing visitors to experience the imaginary worlds of foreign writers.
With the ambitious ideal of "turning nature into a library," children write their own books and create their own illustrations.
Everyone enjoys the choice of cultural activities related to children's literature including exhibitions, performances, storytelling, lectures, film screenings and games.
During the festival, participating countries may host "national days" with the active support of their embassies in Korea as a way to promote their own culture.
In part thanks to this successful festival, Nami Island has become the official sponsor of the Hans Christian Andersen Awards, the highest international recognition given to an author and an illustrator in children's books.
NAMBOOK was also officially presented during the Bologna Children's Book Fair in 2008.
This festival has become truly an internationally-known cultural event.
The festival also transformed Nami Island into a cultural tourist attraction rather than a recreation area.
The building that formally housed the cabaret was converted into Andersen Hall, a main venue for cultural events, and the former amusement park grounds became a great place for performances now called Belgrade Stage.
The televisions in the hotel were replaced by books and, in fact, visitors can find books all around the island, from the benches to the toilets.

“책을 먹고 마시고 베고 깔고 날리며 책 속에서 뒹굴어라.”
2005년 한스 크리스찬 안데르센 탄생을 기념하여 남이섬에서 처음 열린 ‘남이섬세계책나라축제’는 세계의 주목을 받는 책문화 축제로 자리잡는데 성공했다.
한국에서도 전국의 지자체가 어린이책에 관심을 갖고 책문화 축제행사를 갖게된 벤치마킹의 진원지이기도 하다.
2005년부터 매년 열린 이 행사에는 보통 70개국 이상이 참가한다. 오프닝 세레모니 때 참석하는 외교사절도 20개국을 넘는다.
2010년부터는 보다 새롭고 창조적인 콘텐츠를 보여주기 위해 격년제로 책, 비엔날레 형태로 열기로 했다.
이 축제가 여느 축제와 다른 점은 책 속의 환상을 현실 속에서 만날 수 있다는 데 있다.
세계 여러나라의 풍속이나 그림책의 원화 등을 전시하거나 체험을 통해 보여주기도 하고 실제로 외국인을 초청해서 시연하기도 한다.
자연을 도서관으로 만들겠다는 야심찬 포부로 시작된 이 행사는 글을 쓰고 그림을 그리며 책을 실제로 만들며 보기도 하고 전시나 공연, 문화체험, 스토리텔링, 교육, 영상, 게임이 하나의 문화장르로 섞여서 표현된다.
주한 외국 대사관이 직접 펼치는 '국가의 날' 행사를 통해 외국의 다양한 문물을 만나 세계인들과 직접 호흡할 수 있는 기회를 제공하기도 한다. 이 행사로 인해 남이섬은 국제 안데르센상의 국제 후원사가 되었고, 볼로냐를 비롯한 각국의 어린이책 행사장에서는 남이섬책나라축제가 단골로 소개되고 있다. 국내행사이면서 외국에 더 많이 알려진 행사이다. 이 행사는 남이섬을, 먹고 마시는 유원지에서 문화관광지로 바꾸게 해 주었다. 옛날의 캬바레 건물은 문화행사장인 안데르센홀로, 유원지 놀이터는 상시 공연이 이어지는 베오그라드 무대로 바뀌었다. 호텔에 숙박한 손님은 텔레비전 대신 책을 읽고 길거리나 벤치벤치, 화장실에도 책을 비치했다.
